What is a Blog?

A blog is an online public journal, where the user (i.e. blogger)  documents  anything from their daily experiences to even their politcal views.  Blogs are a way to express themselves, provide information, reflect or give input. They are displayed in reversed chronological order, meaning the most recent blog is first. A blog is a useful tool for individuals to get their ideas out on the web. It also allows others  to make comments and provide feedback, based on the bloggers settings.

Common Blogs:

Photo Blogs: A photo blog is a blog in which the blogger will post their pictures instead of text. The blogger may include captions or maybe even an explanation of their photos.

Video Blogs (vlogs): These are very similar to the photo blogs, but insted they allow the user to enter videos they captured, edited, or even created. There are also blogs created by groups that have a collaborated effort involved.

List of other common blogs:

  • Travel Blogs
  • Health Blogs
  • Research Blogs
  • Poltical Blogs

How are Blogs Useful in Education?

Both Teachers and students can find use with blogs.  Teachers can use blogs as a record of what they taught, and at the same time, students can use a blog as a record of what they are learning.  Teachers can blog the information that was taught in a class, as well as post different internet sites and homework assignments.  Blogs are a useful tool that can be used in the classroom to keep the content and assignments organized, and also keep open communication with the students. Not only are written blogs helpful, but podcast of lessons are useful as well. This website is a great source to see how an educational blog works.   http://supportblogging.com/Links+to+School+Bloggers

Benefits of Blogging in the Classroom!

  • Student involvement
  • Technology projects can motivate students to learn, instead of doing traditional reading or writing assignments.
  • Each and every student can participate and share their thoughts
  • Students can respond and comment on each others blogs
  • Blogs can be private or public, so a student might feel more comfortable asking their teacher questions on a private blog with only themself and their teacher that can view the blog.
  • Keeps the class organized and easy to access information
  • Keep track of learning
  • Blogging is Fun!!!
